Week 1: August 27 - August 31

Monday: August 27th

The first day of class always feels like such a huge rush. I always want to do a million things including introducing the course, myself, and everybody else to each other. As always, my intro is quite ambitious, but I like the way it works. I really want to you guys to consider the short story "The Arrowmaker" throughout the semester and think about how the themes reflect your involvement with the course.

Here is a rundown of what we did:

1) Course Introduction - This was very formal, I made sure that everyone was in the right class. We are off to a great start- keep it up!

2) Storytime - "The Arrowmaker" by M. Scott Momaday - I tried to lead a discussion about the story in order to make a point about the class. Remember: Risk Yourselves in Language!

3) Attendance - Not bad the first day, keep on coming to class.

4) Information Sheets - I had you guys fill out basic info so I can use as a resource. I fully intend to have a better introduction for one another. 

     a) Full Name

     b) Best Method of Contact (e-mail, phone, facebook, etc)

     c) Major (What are you studying? Or, if you are still uncertain at this point, what is your dream job?)

     d) Hobbies/Interests (List several, try to be specific)

     e) Something Interesting About Yourself 

I look forward to getting to know you and your work the entire semester.

Assignment: Think about the word Community and how it applies to your life. Consider how the word/concept of Community would apply in other contexts.

Wednesday: August 29th

Due to an unfortunate personal tragedy, I was unable to attend class and had to cancel. I know that some of you were heartbroken at such a thought, but no worries, we will resume class on the 31st!

Some of you e-mailed me about the syllabus and I sent it to you as I returned each individual e-mail.
