EPCC: TH @ 1:00 p.m.

Week 1: August 27 - August 31

Tuesday: August 28th

It's always interesting to see what kind of class that we will have on the first day. Of course, as I showed up for this Tuesday class, everybody was quietly standing outside. I finally opened up the door to our unique classroom and everyone followed. It is pretty interesting having a piano in the classroom. I can't wait until the middle of the semester when we are breaking out into musical numbers during class. Anyway, here are my thoughts about the class:

It seems that there are quite a few shy people in the class. I hope that eventually you will open up and understand that it is perfectly fine to share your thoughts.

I understand class is at 1:00 p.m., just around/after lunch, but let's try our best to be on time.

As always, my intro is quite ambitious, but I like the way it works. I really want to you guys to consider the short story "The Arrowmaker" throughout the semester and think about how the themes reflect your involvement with the course.

Here is a rundown of what we did:
1) Course Introduction - This was very formal, I made sure that everyone was in the right class. We are off to a great start- keep it up!
2) Storytime - "The Arrowmaker" by M. Scott Momaday - I tried to lead a discussion about the story in order to make a point about the class. Remember: Risk Yourselves in Language!
3) Attendance - Not bad the first day, keep on coming to class.
4) Information Sheets - I had you guys fill out basic info so I can use as a resource. I fully intend to have a better introduction for one another.
     a) Full Name
     b) Best Method of Contact (e-mail, phone, facebook, etc)
     c) Major (What are you studying? Or, if you are still uncertain at this point, what is your dream job?)
     d) Hobbies/Interests (List several, try to be specific)
     e) Something Interesting About Yourself

I look forward to getting to know you and your work the entire semester.

Assignment: Think about the word Community and how it applies to your life. Consider how the word/concept of Community would apply in other contexts.

Thursday: August 29th

Second day of class - some of you are still shy/nervous. Hopefully we will take care of that through time. We started our first "in-class" writing assignment - be prepared for many more. Today I wanted you to specifically reflect on your own writing in preparation for Chapter 1 from the textbook (The Writing Process).

Class Rundown:
1) Writing Diagnostic (10-15 minutes)
     a) What scares you about writing?
     b) What do you think you can do to fix it?
2) Debut the Class Website
3) Lecture on Writing/Language/Communication
     a) Audience
     b) Purpose
     c) Difference between informal and informal writing.
4) Writing a Professional E-mail

I decided to give you guys a really easy homework assignment regarding sending a professional e-mail.

Assignment: Before our next class meeting (Sept. 4th), make sure to send me an e-mail to rdmarrufo@gmail.com. It is important that you follow all instructions regarding the "Professional E-mail" presentation I did in class. Don't forget to also leave your name and contact information.
